Brigitte Potter-Mael

Richly textured hand-printed images and scripted words feature strongly in Brigitte Potter-Mael’s work. They often reference the natural sciences and/or philosophical reflections. She also portrays her own persona within the context of ecology and metamorphosis. Brigitte left Germany in 1977 to live in Canada. In 1983, she graduated with a BFA from Concordia University Montreal. She has had various residencies and numerous solo and group exhibitions across Canada, the U.S.A. and Europe. Brigitte currently lives and works between Vancouver and Europe. Her portfolio includes lithographs, woodcuts, her own technique monotypes, installation works, watercolour paintings, and large hand-scripted scrolls. Her works can be found in various public and private collections in Canada and abroad.

"My carving tools include various knives with which I cut and rip random textures, lines and forms out of rigid wooden matrixes for my monoprints. I can never know what the plate may reveal onto the paper and it is the very moment of surprise that entices me to continue the process."
